About Us

“Team spirit: Supportive, welcoming, focused, committed”

The Guernsey Women’s Golf Development Squad was formed in the spring of 2019.  Its ultimate aim is to create short, mid and long-term goals for the Island’s female golfers keen to represent Guernsey.

“Team spirit: Supportive, welcoming, focused, committed”

Aims and Objectives:

Short term: To establish a local and off-island match programme highlighting players who have the potential to represent Guernsey currently and also players who have the potential to represent the island going forward.

Mid Term: To have a competitive and bonded group of players capable and committed to representing the Island at inter insular level.

Long Term: “Golf 21” and beyond Plan. To build upon the short term and mid-term goals to have a strong representation of players capable of competing in the Guernsey 2021 Natwest International Island Games XIX and to sustain the initiative beyond this event.

About the Guernsey Women’s Golf Development Squad

Who we are

The Guernsey Women’s Golf Development Squad includes just under 50 ladies who are members from all the clubs in Guernsey (La Grande Mare GC, Royal Guernsey GC and St Pierre Park GC).  It is open to all ages and levels of ability (handicap).  Anyone is welcome to apply to become a member of the squad on the proviso that they are eager to learn and improve their game and to work together as a team supporting and encouraging one another along the way.

What we do

  • Practical squad sessions

After an initial analysis of basic skills, PGA Advanced Golf Professional and Coach, Phil Sykes, runs a series of practical golf sessions for all squad members.  Here he focuses on a number of standard and more specific golf skills (from set up, bunker shots, pitching and chipping as well as course management and the mental side of golf).

  • Fitness and nutrition

Personal trainer and nutritionist, Ashley Carter, tailors specific fitness training sessions for the squad to help strengthen core muscle groups and enhance endurance.  These sessions are held in a fitness studio at the College of FE (on the site of the Performing Arts Centre).

Ashley also provides guidance for the squad on what foods to eat to help with match preparation and concentration during competitions as well as enhancing stamina and endurance.

  • Matches

A number of matches for all players are scheduled throughout the playing season.  These include matches against the island’s juniors, visiting teams to Guernsey and away matches in The Isle of Wight and Jersey.

  • Annual charity match

An annual charity match is organised to raise money for a local cause.  This also provides players with the opportunity for more competition practice and team bonding.

Why we exist

  • To provide a platform that junior female golfers can aspire to be part of
  • To introduce new female golfers to the game
  • To help female players reach their full potential
  • To create a togetherness within local female golfers
  • To produce a strong competitive squad of female players able to represent their island

Where we play

The squad takes advantage of using both 18-hole courses and practice areas on the island – it has no fixed base.

When we play

Regular practice sessions and matches are played throughout the year.
