Guernsey’s commitment to growing women’s and girls’ sport has been recognised on the national stage, with Angela Goddard shortlisted for the prestigious England Golf, Women & Girls Trailblazer award.
The award celebrates individuals who have tackled under-representation in sport by raising awareness and creating opportunities for women and girls to take up – and continue to enjoy – golf. The winner will be announced at a national awards ceremony on 3 March at the Deansgate Hotel in Manchester.
Angela, who will attend the ceremony alongside a member of the Guernsey Women’s Golf Development Squad, has been recognised for her outstanding voluntary work in transforming opportunities for female golfers across the island.
Six years ago, while serving as Guernsey’s Island Team Captain, Angela identified a lack of structured development and participation pathways for women and girls in golf. In response, she founded the Guernsey Women’s Golf Development Squad (GWGDS) in 2019, creating an inclusive programme that welcomes complete beginners through to elite players with island-level ambitions.
Building on its success, Angela later launched the Girls into Golf Squad (GIGS), providing a fun, supportive, all-female environment for girls under 18. Together, the initiatives now engage more than 90 women and girls in regular golf participation, with a further 200 reached through taster sessions and community outreach.
Under Angela’s leadership, women and girls from Guernsey’s golf clubs are now working together, strengthening participation, confidence, and long-term development across the island.
Speaking about the nomination, Angela said she was “incredibly proud” of the community that has grown around the squads and delighted to see Guernsey recognised nationally for its commitment to women’s and girls’ sport.
The Women & Girls Trailblazer shortlist places Guernsey alongside leading programmes and individuals from across the UK, highlighting the island as a model for how grassroots sport can thrive through passion, inclusion, and community spirit.
